There's something really beautiful about drinking so much coffee. After a few shots of espresso you either build a city out of sticks or you become the giant Godzilla tearing it all down. But really, my favorite part so far about this writing experience is getting out to all the different neighborhoods of Malmö to try new cafes. Each has it's own style, it's own vibe, and most important they all serve up really delicious coffee.
If you find yourself in the center of Malmö you'll find most people go to one of the 12 Espresso House's (read: Sweden's answer to Starbucks) for a cup of coffee. Screw that, take another minute and navigate yourself to Noir Kaffekultur instead. A coffee bourgeois paradise, this cafe is a regular on the top spots for coffee in Malmö. There's a nice rotation on house made baked treats, salads, sandwiches and even fresh pressed juice. Most importantly they also rotate local coffee roasters and try to keep selections ecological. Try the local espresso (25kr) and if not try their espresso in their Iced Latte (35kr) complete with eco-friendly milk. And if it's not terribly sunny but you need to sit outside, ask for a blanket from one of the friendly Baristas.
If instead you find yourself at Triangeln Station in the middle Malmö, take the Southern exit up towards the street. Once you've reached ground again look to your right and you'll see Doffeln Kafé. Located right across the dentistry school in Malmö, Doffeln has arguably the cheapest espresso (15kr) in town. Amen for student discounts when you're not a student, am I right? I tried their double shot latte (29kr) and sat outside to stare at all the strange people going to study putting their hands in your mouth (i.e. dentistry). Doffeln Kafé is pretty laid back, they've got all your classic coffee picks, a fridge with different sodas and what not, and because of the location tons of food made fresh & fast. You can try their baked potatoes (70kr), salads (65kr), or sourdough baguettes (65kr) in house or order take-away. If for some reason you're at Doffeln and don't care about any of these things they also sell tickets to Malmö FF football matches.
Saving the best for last, Solde Kaffebar is right on Regementsgatan off the main shopping street in Malmö. Co-owned and operated by Dan, Johan, & Jonas, Solde has been around 11 years and the last 5 they've been roasting their very own coffee. This is a true coffee bar, these three are sourcing & blending their own roasts right in Malmö harbor and rotating them in their shop every once in a while. I stopped in during Week 36 and chatted a bit with the barista, while I didn't catch his name he was super friendly and great company. Almost everyone walking in seemed to already know him, so you get the sense that there's quite a few regulars dropping in.
Even though I wanted to try their slow single cup drip, in the interest of time I first ordered a single Mästers Kaffe Espresso (15kr). Described as sweet and slightly bitter, it was definitely interesting. It was that strange sensation when you're not sure if something is tasty but you keep going and before you know it, you're out of espresso. I also tried their drip Bodils Kaffe (25kr), which was as advertised very plump, almost like putting a little piece of bread in your mouth - if bread was liquid coffee? That doesn't make sense. The point is, while I'm there 2 different people walk in and buy two bags each of Bodils Kaffe (160kr for 500g). And if you're buying coffee beans in house, just ask and they'll go right ahead and grind them for you. Out of coffee filters? They sell those too.
Solde's Kaffebar is definitively a simple, no limerick, great coffee bar. And I have to admit I was a little intimidated by the level of sophistication, but everyone here is so great, the espresso is so rich in flavor, so I really can't wait to go back and try more of their blends in the future.
